NBC has officially announced that production is underway on its highly anticipated contemporary reboot of the classic 1974 detective drama The Rockford Files. Featuring television veteran David Boreanaz—known for his celebrated work across genre-defining series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Bones—stepping into the iconic role originally made famous by the late James Garner, the network is gearing up for an early 2027 premiere. Along with the production kickoff announcement, NBC has offered eager fans a first look at behind-the-scenes imagery featuring Boreanaz on location as the beloved, smooth-talking private investigator.

The project, spearheaded by showrunner and writer Mike Daniels, aims to bridge the gap between classic television nostalgia and modern storytelling sensibilities. During NBCUniversal’s Backlot Pass press event earlier in the summer, Daniels and Boreanaz took the opportunity to discuss their overarching creative vision. The duo detailed how they are working diligently to honor the legacy of the original series, carefully preserving the foundational elements that made James Garner’s portrayal a timeless television staple while reframing them through a contemporary lens.

Central to this respectful adaptation was securing the blessing and involvement of James Garner’s daughter, Gigi Garner. Both Daniels and Boreanaz emphasized how vital her support has been throughout the developmental and early production phases, ensuring that the spirit of the original show remains intact for a new generation of viewers.

Boreanaz further discussed his approach to the daunting task of reviving such a legendary character during an appearance at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival over the summer. Acknowledging the natural skepticism that often surrounds the rebooting of beloved classic properties, the actor expressed a deep commitment to honoring Garner’s memory. Addressing the legacy of the role, Boreanaz noted that while comparisons are inevitable, his primary motivation is to make James Garner proud while injecting his own distinct interpretation into the character of Jim Rockford.

Reflecting on previous, ultimately unrealized attempts to bring the property back to the screen—which included a 2009 pilot starring Dermot Mulroney and a shelved 2021 feature film adaptation that was slated to star Vince Vaughn—Boreanaz declined to speculate on why those earlier iterations failed to materialize. Instead, he expressed confidence that the current television landscape is uniquely suited for the character’s return, adding that he feels he has finally reached the right age and maturity to step into Rockford’s shoes.

While specific plot details for the upcoming episodes remain closely guarded, Boreanaz provided some tantalizing hints about what viewers can expect from the series premiere and its subsequent narrative arc. The contemporary update finds Jim Rockford recently paroled after serving time for a crime he did not commit. According to Boreanaz, the narrative wastes little time thrusting the reluctant hero back into the fray, noting that within two days of gaining his freedom, Rockford finds himself neck-deep in a new investigation.

Beyond standalone weekly cases, the reboot will incorporate serialized overarching storylines. Boreanaz teased that a larger narrative threat will loom over Rockford, involving dangerous figures from his past, including members of the mob and various con artists who are actively pursuing him. Even as he navigates these high-stakes entanglements, the core appeal of the character remains unchanged—Rockford is a man who always manages to get the job done, relying on his signature blend of wit, resourcefulness, and down-to-earth charm.

Visually, the production is striking a deliberate balance between retro aesthetics and modern cinematic style. Boreanaz confirmed that fans of the original series will see the return of several signature hallmarks, including Rockford’s iconic car and his traditional residence in a trailer home. Furthermore, the production has leaned into locations in Malibu that manage to retain a timeless, 1970s atmosphere, allowing the series to effortlessly blend nostalgic appreciation with a fresh, contemporary execution.

James Garner’s Daughter Praises the Pilot and David Boreanaz

The creative team received a major vote of confidence late in May when Gigi Garner attended a private screening of the pilot episode at the personal invitation of Boreanaz. Following the screening, she took to social media to share her overwhelmingly positive reaction to the contemporary update. Describing the experience as mind-blowing, she noted that it was also Boreanaz’s first time viewing the completed pilot.

In her enthusiastic public statement, Gigi Garner declared the show fabulous and shared a deeply emotional moment about the star’s intentions for the project. She recounted that Boreanaz told her his sole objective was to make her father proud, a sentiment that brought her to tears and led her to express her belief that her father would have been thoroughly delighted by the tribute. Her public endorsement, accompanied by photographs highlighting a striking visual similarity between the two actors, provided a significant morale boost to fans apprehensive about the reboot.

The updated premise follows James Rockford, portrayed by Boreanaz, as he attempts to rebuild his life in Los Angeles after being wrongfully imprisoned. His initial efforts to maintain a low profile and achieve legitimacy are quickly derailed, pulling him into dangerous conflicts with both local law enforcement and organized crime syndicates.

Alongside David Boreanaz in the lead role, the supporting cast features a talented ensemble including Michaela McManus, Felix Solis, and Jacki Weaver, adding considerable dramatic depth to the gritty, character-driven narrative.

Behind the camera, the creative framework of the series is guided by a seasoned production team. Mike Daniels serves as writer and executive producer, working alongside fellow executive producers Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. Chris Leanza joins the team as co-executive producer, while acclaimed director Greg Mottola steered the production of the pilot episode, establishing the stylistic and atmospheric tone for NBC’s upcoming take on the classic franchise as filming moves forward toward its planned debut.
