In a sweeping and emotional interview with Juju Chang on Good Morning America, Collin opened up about his time on the hit TLC series Jon & Kate Plus 8, making harrowing allegations against his mother, Kate Gosselin, regarding severe physical abuse, isolation, and exploitation during his childhood.

The reality series, which captivated millions of viewers across the United States, aired from 2007 to 2017. It chronicled the lives of Jon and Kate Gosselin and their eight children, a family thrust into the national spotlight after Kate gave birth to sextuplets in Pennsylvania in 2004, following the birth of their twin daughters, Cara and Mady. For a decade, the show presented a bustling, albeit chaotic, portrait of large-family life. However, according to Collin, the public narrative was entirely manufactured.

"Simply put, my whole life that I lived was a lie. All the things you see on TV, lies," Collin told Good Morning America.

Reflecting on promotional materials for his forthcoming book, Collin pointed directly to the symbolism chosen for the cover, which features a hand placed firmly over his mouth. He explained that the imagery represents the suppression he experienced throughout his youth. "The hand over the mouth was ‘be quiet, stop talking.’ I couldn’t talk about what went on in the home, and now I finally can," he stated.

According to Collin, his troubles with the production began when he started questioning the relentless demands of the television crew and the environment created around him and his siblings. He alleged that his mother began singling him out for harsh treatment because he actively pushed back against the grueling filming schedule.

"We were redoing takes. It was like a cry a little harder, laugh a little louder, and that’s what caused me to say I don’t want to be a part of this machine anymore," Collin recalled. He emphasized that the children involved in the production were subjected to a level of labor and pressure that lacked adult protection. "The truth is that my siblings and I were being overworked," Collin said. "There was just no adults to say maybe this isn’t okay for children."

The alleged mistreatment intensified following his parents’ high-profile divorce in 2009. Following the separation, Kate Gosselin was granted custody of all eight children. Collin claims that it was during this period that the abuse escalated behind closed doors, asserting that his mother isolated him from the rest of the household and subjected him to extreme confinement, including making him sleep in a locked cell in the basement.

In the interview, Collin detailed a specific incident from the fourth grade when physical signs of alleged abuse at home spilled over into his school environment. He recounted being pulled from class after a teacher noticed visible injuries.

"My mom had dragged me across the room by my earlobe, and my ear was purple and swollen," Collin told GMA. "My teacher saw, and then I talked to my guidance counselor, and I told them about it, and my mom was not very happy that I spoke about that."

The situation at home continued to deteriorate over the following years. Collin alleged that after he attempted to run away from home, his mother zip-tied his hands and feet before locking him away in the basement cell. When he was 12 years old, Kate Gosselin had him institutionalized in a psychiatric facility. Collin claims that while he was confined there, he was systematically prevented from having contact with his father, Jon Gosselin.

The battle to secure Collin’s release spanned years and significant financial resources. In 2023, Jon Gosselin publicly claimed that he had spent approximately $1 million in legal and related expenses to successfully extricate Collin from the institution.

For years, Kate Gosselin has maintained a starkly different narrative regarding Collin’s behavioral history and their estrangement. In past statements, she has publicly described her son as "a troubled young man" who "suffers from multiple psychiatric diagnoses."

However, Collin pushed back against those assertions during his interview, revealing that he underwent an independent psychological evaluation in 2023. According to Collin, the independent assessment concluded that he does not possess the mental health conditions previously attributed to him by his mother. When asked if he was surprised by the results, Collin replied, "I was like, ‘No, because I knew that. It’s just that I needed it on paper.’"

Despite the years of estrangement, institutionalization, and public conflict, Collin concluded his television appearance with a direct and emotional message directed at his brothers and sisters—Maddie, Cara, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel.

"To Maddie, Cara, Alexis, Aaden, Leah, and Joel. No matter how things look from the outside, I love you. I always have, and always will," he said. He added a poignant reflection on the unique and difficult circumstances of his upbringing: "I just will never know what it’s like to have a normal childhood, and have a childhood with my siblings, and we will never get that back."

As of press time, Kate Gosselin has not responded immediately to requests for comment from media outlets regarding Collin’s latest allegations. However, she has consistently denied claims of abuse in the past. During a 2016 interview, she addressed historical inquiries into her parenting, stating that although her family had been "investigated many times," the allegations brought against her were "always unfounded." Representatives for Kate Gosselin, including her attorney Richard Puleo, have also been approached for comment.

Individuals concerned about the welfare of a child who may be experiencing abuse or neglect can contact the National Child Abuse Hotline by calling or texting 1-800-422-4453.
