Grammy-winning music producer and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff has launched a sharp critique against Ed Sheeran, taking aim at the British singer-songwriter over how he managed the intense backlash surrounding his Loop Tour and the controversial removal of rapper Macklemore.

The controversy unfolded after Macklemore was dropped from the high-profile stadium tour following an onstage display of support for Palestine amid the ongoing conflict with Israel. The rapper’s sudden exit came to pass after billionaire Robert Kraft reportedly coordinated with other prominent stadium owners to block Macklemore from performing at their venues, citing his political stance.

While Sheeran later insisted that he was “not complicit” in Macklemore’s firing, Antonoff expressed little sympathy for that defense during a candid interview with The Guardian. The renowned producer, who is widely known for his extensive work with Taylor Swift, argued that Sheeran fundamentally misunderstood the gravity of the moment and folded under pressure from corporate and billionaire interests.

“It’s not in any way a strange, uncomfortable or controversial thing to say, it’s a deeply human thing to say,” Antonoff told the publication, referring to Macklemore’s onstage call to “free Palestine.”

“They’re going to let some f***ing promoter tell me what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside,” Antonoff added, making his disdain for corporate censorship clear.

Antonoff went on to suggest that the British pop star squandered a defining moment of artistic integrity. In his view, Sheeran should have responded to the pressure by dismantling the corporate framework of the tour entirely rather than allowing outside entities to dictate the terms of his lineup.

“He missed a massive, beautiful opportunity there: just cancel the whole fing tour, then play for free outside each venue, raise a bunch of money, rather than let a fing billionaire tell you what to do,” Antonoff said. “The reason it’s not an anomaly or niche issue is because we all live in a world where billionaires are constantly telling us what to do. So stand the f*** up.”

Representatives for Ed Sheeran have been approached by The Independent for comment regarding Antonoff’s remarks.

The fallout from Macklemore’s removal has severely impacted the logistics and reputation of the Loop Tour. Hours after learning he was pulled from the lineup, Macklemore issued a public statement noting that Sheeran’s self-described “apolitical stance” was “being challenged in a way it never had been before.”

The decision to drop the rapper sparked immediate and widespread solidarity within the music community. All four of Sheeran’s supporting acts made the decision to withdraw from the tour in protest. At the same time, high-profile figures such as Roger Waters publicly called out Sheeran for his inaction, while the singer experienced a significant digital backlash, losing tens of thousands of followers on Instagram over a matter of days.

Facing mounting pressure and public scrutiny, Sheeran eventually addressed the controversy directly during a concert in Philadelphia. Visibly emotional upon his return to the stage, the singer tearfully confessed that he felt “abandoned” by friends and family following what he described as “one of the worst weeks of my life.”

During the same performance, Sheeran attempted to clarify his personal position on the complex geopolitical conflict, acknowledging the deep suffering on both sides.

“What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain,” Sheeran told the audience. “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.”

Despite Sheeran’s onstage remarks and subsequent attempts to navigate the fallout, the entertainment industry continues to grapple with the ripple effects of the tour’s disruption. Meanwhile, Macklemore has maintained an unwavering stance, doubling down on his advocacy for Palestinian relief and announcing plans to launch a dedicated Free Palestine tour.
