That was precisely the case with a small, 322-square-foot apartment located in the Vidny Gorod residential complex, situated about four miles outside of Moscow. The compact yet thoughtfully designed home was received as a surprise gift by a woman named Lara, courtesy of her daughter, Marta, and her son-in-law.

While home renovations typically require endless consultations, design reviews, and stressful decision-making between homeowners and designers, this project followed an entirely different path. The couple personally oversaw every phase of the transformation, coordinating closely with design professionals while keeping the entire venture a strict secret until the very end.

"Lara knew nothing about it and didn’t see the space that they were going to give her until it was completed and she first set foot in her new home," says interior designer Polina Chumakova, founder of Lagolga Buro, who oversaw the comprehensive interior design of the residence.

Lara’s deeply rooted passion for cooking and baking served as a primary guiding light for several key design choices throughout the apartment. Her daughter Marta envisioned turning the modest 322-square-foot footprint into a fully functional, welcoming home capable of accommodating the entire family for weekend gatherings and holiday celebrations.

"It was important to create a comfortable space not only for cooking but also for spending time together, so that on weekends the apartment could be filled with the aroma of homemade desserts," explains Chumakova.

Family dynamics played a central role in shaping the layout. Lara has two children—Marta and her brother—along with two grandchildren, ages 13 and 9. Given that the family frequently gathers on weekends and holidays, every square foot of the apartment had to be optimized to foster togetherness without feeling cramped or overwhelmed by the collective presence of six people.

A Space That Is Both Classic and Contemporary

The apartment’s stylistic identity bridges contemporary design sensibilities with classic architectural elements, reflecting both the distinctive architecture of the Vidny Gorod complex and its broader urban context. Achieving this delicate balance required careful planning, particularly when weighing aesthetic ambitions against the practical realities of a compact floor plan and a defined project budget.

"The style was carefully defined, choosing solutions suited to both the home’s size and the budget for this project," Chumakova notes. "We invested in high-quality finishes and carefully selected furniture, lighting, and accessories. The idea was to combine a contemporary, understated design with natural walnut accents and a few vintage details. The result is an interior with a classic character, yet without references to any specific era."

Despite the exciting premise of the project, the design team encountered several notable structural and environmental hurdles during the early stages of development. The original floor plan possessed architectural quirks that demanded a careful, strategic reorganization of the interior space. Among the primary challenges left behind by the builder were a bulky load-bearing pillar situated awkwardly within the living quarters and a layout that initially divided the square footage into two separate, cramped small bathrooms.

Because the load-bearing column could not be removed or relocated, Chumakova and her team had to find an innovative way to integrate it into the layout. Their solution was to conceal the massive structural element inside a large, custom-built storage closet located in the entryway. This strategic move not only made the column significantly less noticeable but also vastly improved the functional efficiency of the foyer.

Furthermore, the design team decided to combine the two separate small bathrooms into a single, cohesive wet room. This consolidation created a much more comfortable environment for daily living while simultaneously unlocking additional storage capacity for the household.

Another substantial challenge facing the design team was a relative lack of natural light. The apartment received very little direct sunlight, a factor that heavily influenced the selection of interior colors, materials, and finishes.

"The apartment receives little direct sunlight, so we paid close attention to the choice of colors and finishes," Chumakova explains. "For example, the light, milk-colored porcelain tile, initially selected for the floor, appeared much more beige in the space than we had expected. We replaced it and also adjusted the other colors to account for this effect, striving to keep the interior as bright and warm as possible."

Lighting design was also approached with multi-layered complexity to address the daily needs of the resident without relying on a single, harsh overhead source. The team planned several distinct lighting scenarios, incorporating integrated ceiling lighting, elegant pendant lamps, accent illumination for display cases, and adjustable spotlights. In total, the modest apartment features about five different types of lighting, allowing the atmosphere to shift seamlessly from bright and functional to warm and intimate.

Every Inch Counts

To maximize the usability of the 322-square-foot footprint, the design focused heavily on versatile furnishings and multi-purpose solutions that prevent visual clutter and maintain an open, airy feeling throughout the rooms.

"Instead of the classic light fixture above the dining table, we chose a solution that would maintain the open feeling of the space and not limit the table to a specific position," Chumakova says. "We also opted for a sofa bed instead of a traditional bed. This allowed us to keep more open space and make the room more versatile: During the day, it can be used as a place to relax and spend time with the family."

Rather than feeling constricted by the compact layout, the design intentionally prioritizes the kitchen, establishing it as the undisputed heart of the home. Knowing how much Lara values baking and culinary arts, the design team carved out a generous portion of the apartment’s square footage for this specific zone.

"We deliberately wanted to dedicate a significant portion of the apartment to it, because it’s one of the most important areas of the home for its owner," Chumakova notes. "The work area is located near the window overlooking a courtyard: It’s a pleasant spot to spend time cooking or simply looking at the scene outside."

All storage systems throughout the home were custom-designed to blend seamlessly into the architecture, ensuring that utilitarian elements remained visually subdued.

"We wanted the cabinets to be almost invisible," Chumakova says. "There are two large storage units in the apartment: one in the entryway and one in the living room."

Color choices were similarly deployed to delineate functional zones without fragmenting the overall visual space. The entryway features walls painted in an olive green shade from Little Greene paint, while the ceiling and the doors of the built-in entryway closet are finished in the exact same hue to create a unified envelope. In the living and sleeping quarters, a softer milky white predominates, complemented by natural walnut accents. More intense bursts of color appear sparingly through specific design details, such as the vibrant orange upholstery of a pouf and a matching floor lamp.

In the entryway and kitchen, the flooring consists of white tiles dotted with small black accents, providing a graphic, contemporary classic touch that echoes the styling of the vintage light fixtures. Traditional moldings, utilized in the entryway and on the wall behind the sofa, add rhythm and depth to the vertical surfaces, offering a modern reinterpretation of classic architectural details.

The scale of every furnishing was carefully considered to ensure the pieces neither overwhelmed the compact apartment nor compromised the established design aesthetic. By reinterpreting traditional elements—ranging from walnut moldings to uniquely shaped vintage lamps—the interior designer successfully adapted a classic character to the modern constraints of a small residential footprint.

Ultimately, the completed apartment renovation achieved an overwhelmingly positive reception from Marta, who poured immense time and personal dedication into overseeing every detail alongside her husband.

Reflecting on the unique circumstances of the project, Chumakova highlights how the element of surprise ultimately benefited the final outcome. "It was a perfectly successful experiment," the designer concludes. "Perhaps, if it had been a more conventional project with the future owner, it would have involved them in every phase and it would have been more challenging. It’s possible that some of the bolder solutions might not have been approved."

By operating in total secrecy to surprise her mother, Marta secured a rare degree of creative freedom, culminating in a finished home that is precisely tailored to the lifestyle, passions, and aesthetic preferences of its resident.

Some gifts are best kept a secret until the moment they are handed over to their recipient, transforming a simple exchange into a profound and unforgettable life event.
