The British Toy & Hobby Association (BTHA) has unveiled a transformative new structure for its prestigious Toy Retailer of the Year Awards, marking a significant departure from the traditional format that has defined the competition for years. In a move designed to better reflect the modern retail landscape, the 2026 awards have been completely restructured to prioritize business achievements, innovation, and individual excellence over the rigid, category-based model of the past.
For years, the awards were segmented by the specific business model of the retailer, distinguishing between single-store independents, multi-store independents, toy departments, retail multiples, and online-only platforms. While this approach provided a clear framework, the BTHA identified that it often created artificial silos. In some instances, this structure meant that an award might be bestowed upon the strongest candidate within a limited field, rather than recognizing a retailer that had achieved truly exceptional, market-leading success over the previous 12 months. By pivoting to a performance-based model, the association is opening the door for a much wider range of toy retailers to compete on equal terms, regardless of their operational size or sales channel.
The 2026 awards will now be anchored by five core categories, each designed to highlight specific areas of business excellence. These include the Independent Retailer of the Year, Campaign of the Year, the Partnership Award, the Retail Playmaker Award, and the Standout Achievement award. In addition to these, the BTHA has introduced two Special Recognition awards, which will be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel should they identify a retailer or individual who has made an extraordinary contribution to the industry.
This shift in focus ensures that the emphasis is placed firmly on the quality of work produced during the past year. Under the new guidelines, independents—whether they operate a single boutique or a multi-store chain—will continue to enjoy a dedicated category. This category allows for the inclusion of a "Highly Commended" status, ensuring that exceptional performance is acknowledged even if a top prize is not secured. Furthermore, independent retailers are no longer limited to just one entry; they are encouraged to also enter the Campaign of the Year, the Retail Playmaker Award, and both of the Special Recognition awards. This change provides a pathway for a single independent business to be celebrated across multiple facets of their operations, reflecting the multifaceted nature of modern retail.
For larger retailers, such as toy departments, grocery chains, multiples, and online platforms, the removal of category-specific awards does not diminish their opportunity for recognition. On the contrary, these businesses are now eligible for the Campaign of the Year, the Partnership Award, the Standout Achievement category, and the Industry Champion award. Most notably, all retailers, regardless of their primary trading method, are now eligible for the overall Toy Retailer of the Year title.
The BTHA has taken careful steps to ensure the new criteria acknowledge the diverse ways in which modern consumers shop. The importance of digital commerce has been formally woven into the criteria for five of the seven awards. This ensures that a retailer operating through its own dedicated website, a third-party marketplace, or via social commerce channels is assessed on a level playing field. By focusing on the strategy and the execution of the retail experience rather than the specific channel, the BTHA is signaling a move toward a more integrated understanding of retail success.
Perhaps the most significant addition to the awards program is the focus on individual contributors. For the first time in the history of the competition, two awards are dedicated to recognizing the people behind the businesses. The Retail Playmaker Award is designed to honor an individual who has actively championed the value of play within their organization over the past year. This category seeks to reward those who go beyond mere sales to foster a genuine culture of playfulness and engagement. Complementing this is the Industry Champion award, which recognizes either a person or a business that has emerged as a strong, positive public voice for the toy industry and the importance of play in childhood development.
The criteria for the most coveted title—Overall Toy Retailer of the Year—have also undergone a major change. Historically, a retailer was required to win their specific category before they could even be considered for the overall award. This requirement has been completely removed for 2026. Under the new, more flexible system, the judging panel will have the freedom to choose the overall winner from the entire pool of entries, as well as from their own independent nominations. By looking at the year as a whole, the panel will be able to evaluate the true impact of a retailer’s performance, unencumbered by the previous entry restrictions.
To manage this complex evaluation process, the BTHA has assembled a new, highly experienced panel of approximately 15 industry experts. This group will be chaired by Phil Ratcliffe, the former BTHA Chairman and President, whose deep knowledge of the industry will be instrumental in guiding the selection process. The panel brings together a diverse range of perspectives, including current members of the BTHA, seasoned judges from the independent retail sector, and representatives from leading trade titles, including Toy World. The panel is scheduled to meet in early December, and the BTHA intends to release the official shortlist for the 2026 awards later that month.
The winners of these inaugural awards under the new structure will be announced at the prestigious Toy Industry Awards, which will take place on the opening evening of Toy Fair 2027, Tuesday 19th January. The event is set to move to a brand-new venue, Juno at Olympia. This state-of-the-art space offers direct access from the National Hall and boasts the capacity to accommodate up to 400 guests, providing a more spacious and accessible environment for the industry to celebrate its achievements. The BTHA has noted that tickets will be subject to availability, and interested parties are encouraged to keep an eye on official communications regarding the ticket sales process.
The 2026 awards are open to every toy retailer operating within the UK and Ireland. The entry process has been streamlined to ensure that it is as accessible as possible. Retailers are invited to enter as many categories as they wish, with each submission requiring a separate, focused entry. Each entry should consist of up to 600 words detailing why the retailer or the nominated individual deserves to win, supplemented by up to four supporting images to provide visual context for their achievements. It is important to note that there is no formal application process for the Overall Toy Retailer of the Year award, as this is determined solely by the judging panel.
For those planning to participate, time is of the essence. All entries for the 2026 Toy Retailer of the Year Awards must be submitted no later than Friday 27th November. With the industry’s focus turning toward these new categories, the upcoming awards are poised to set a new standard for recognizing the dedication, innovation, and passion that define the UK and Irish toy retail landscape. Interested retailers can access the entry portal and find full details on the criteria for each category via the official BTHA website.
