A former New Jersey elementary school teacher who gave birth to a child fathered by her underage former student has pleaded guilty in the shocking sex abuse case, bringing a legal resolution closer even as the victim insists he initiated the relationship and wants the charges dropped entirely.
Laura Caron, 36, entered a guilty plea to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced on October 30. Under the terms of the plea agreement, the former educator faces a sentence of five years in a state correctional facility.
The case first came to light after a multi-year relationship that prosecutors say began when the victim was just an 11-year-old student and continued until he was 15 years old. Caron had initially met the boy, who was born in 2005, when she taught him and his brother fifth grade at Middle Township Elementary School in Cape May Court House, New Jersey.

Over time, the families developed a close dynamic, and the boundaries between the educator and her pupil eroded significantly. According to reports from the Daily Mail, the family allowed their two sons and daughter to sleep at Caron’s home several nights a week, creating an environment that prosecutors argued facilitated the abuse.
Investigators stated that Caron engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with the boy over a prolonged period. The situation escalated dramatically when Caron became pregnant by the student when he was 13 years old, eventually giving birth to a daughter in 2019.
For years, the secret remained buried beneath the surface of the close-knit community relationship. The reality of the situation did not come to light until December 2024, when the boy’s father noticed an uncanny physical resemblance between Caron’s child, himself, and his son in a photograph posted on Facebook. That realization sparked an immediate chain of events that led to law enforcement intervention and the unravelling of the hidden relationship.
As law enforcement officers and investigators delved deeper into the household dynamics, they uncovered additional troubling details. According to court records and reports from local media outlets, the victim’s brother once walked in and witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his sleeping sibling. Furthermore, the victim’s sister recalled instances of falling asleep beside her brother, only to awaken and discover that he was no longer there, but was instead sleeping in Caron’s bed.

Despite the gravity of the criminal charges and the evidence compiled by state investigators, the victim, now approximately 21 years old, has consistently defended Caron. In interviews following the public disclosure of the case, he asserted that he was the individual who initiated the romantic and physical aspects of their connection.
"They need to drop all charges. I wasn’t groomed or raped or manipulated by her. She never initiated anything," he told the media. "I started everything. If it was up to me she wouldn’t have been in jail."
Caron, who previously played basketball at Cabrini University in Pennsylvania, was originally arrested and charged on January 15, 2025. At the time of her initial arrest, Prosecutor Sutherland announced that she was facing multiple serious felony counts, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She was formally indicted by a grand jury in June 2025.
Throughout the legal proceedings, prosecutors emphasized the severe breach of professional ethics involved in the case. "Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust," Sutherland stated when announcing the initial charges against the former educator.

As part of the terms outlined in her recent plea agreement, Caron will be required to surrender her teaching license permanently and will be barred from ever holding public employment in the future. Additionally, she will undergo a specialized psychological evaluation to determine whether her behavior is deemed repetitive or compulsive, a judicial requirement that could influence the final execution of her sentence.
Following the completion of her five-year prison term, Caron will be placed on parole supervision for the remainder of her life. She will also be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law, imposing long-term monitoring requirements upon her release back into society.
Formal sentencing for Caron has been scheduled for January 8, 2027, in Cape May County court, where the final legal parameters of her punishment will be officially handed down by the presiding judge.
