Among the notable creators scheduled to appear on the panel is author Mia Wenjen, who has penned multiple works featured in the showcase. Wenjen will be joined by illustrator Keith Henry Brown, with whom she collaborated on the acclaimed picture book Postcards from Malcolm X: How Yuri Kochiyama Became a Civil Rights Activist. The book sheds light on an extraordinary and often overlooked chapter of American history, tracing the transformative friendship and shared vision of equality that sparked when Japanese American activist Yuri Kochiyama shook Malcolm X’s hand at a courthouse in 1963. Through this narrative, young readers are introduced to an unsung hero of the civil rights movement and learn how leaders from different communities found strength in solidarity, justice, and hope.

Also joining the panel is Violeta Encarnación, illustrator of Barbed Wire Between Us, another powerful collaboration written by Wenjen. The book offers a structurally unique approach to storytelling through a single poem that holds two distinct lives separated by decades yet bound by the exact same physical barrier. When read forward, the poem follows a Japanese American girl who is uprooted and sent to an incarceration camp during World War II, reducing her world to dust, distance, and longing. When read in reverse, the narrative transforms to reveal a Latina girl standing in that same place, detained generations later, creating a lyrical mirror held up to both the past and the present.

The star-studded lineup further features Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park, author of the evocative picture book Run. Sing. Dream. Spanning figures from Rosa Parks and James Baldwin to Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai, Park’s book celebrates the myriad forms that bravery can take in a changing world. Utilizing spare, poetic text alongside vibrant illustrations, the work highlights quiet acts of resistance, powerful songs, determined marches, and enduring dreams. It ultimately challenges children everywhere to reflect on their own lives and ponder a vital question: What will you do to be brave?

Rounding out the panel of creators are author Traci N. Todd and acclaimed illustrator Vashti Harrison, the creative force behind That You Are Here Is No Small Thing. Described as both honest and empowering, the book serves as a moving exploration of resilience, guiding young descendants of enslaved Africans through the complex history that led them to exist and thrive today. Through these pages, readers witness how Black Americans have historically relied on one another to fight against oppression and how the enduring strength of their ancestors remains a constant presence.
