Celebrity Traitors star James Acaster has come forward to reveal that crucial scenes were left on the cutting room floor by BBC editors, shedding light on why singer James Blunt really led the charge to banish former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh.
The dramatic fallout unfolded during last week’s episodes of the hit star-studded roundtable, which saw Hesmondhalgh become the latest high-profile player to be eliminated from the competition. Her departure followed a targeted campaign by Blunt, who aggressively pushed his theory that the acclaimed actor was secretly operating as one of the game’s notorious Traitors.
During the broadcast, Blunt explained to his fellow contestants that he suspected Hesmondhalgh because she had received the very first immunity shield of the competition. That initial accolade had been handed to her after the rest of the group overwhelmingly agreed she was the most trustworthy person among them. Blunt’s logic on screen was that, as part of a secret twist designed to throw the contestants off balance, the producers might have actually handed the first immunity shield to the very first person selected to be a Traitor.
However, the dramatic payoff of the roundtable saw Hesmondhalgh reveal her true identity as a Faithful upon receiving the most votes and being banished from the castle. The incorrect accusation left the remaining contestants visibly frustrated, with many seemingly blaming Blunt for steering the group down the wrong path and costing them a valuable Faithful teammate.
While Blunt’s aired reasoning struck many viewers at home as far-fetched and overly speculative, co-star Acaster has now revealed that a significant portion of Blunt’s actual logic and interactions with Hesmondhalgh were completely edited out of the final broadcast.
Speaking to The Times, Acaster detailed the missing context that completely changes the narrative of how the suspicion built up inside the castle.

“In the edit, James Blunt’s reason was that Julie was given the first shield,” Acaster explained to the publication. “What actually happened is that when they did the shoulder tap for the Traitors’ pick at the beginning, James told Julie who he thought was acting suspiciously around the table.”
Acaster went on to explain the crucial strategic dynamic that followed this private exchange. At that early stage in the competition, the Traitors had been chosen, but crucially, they did not yet know one another’s identities. Acaster noted that if someone actually were a Traitor at that juncture, basic survival instinct would dictate that they keep their suspicions to themselves, rather than openly sharing theories that might inadvertently out their fellow turretmates.
According to Acaster, after the roundtable concluded, Hesmondhalgh approached Blunt and confronted him based on that exact strategic logic. She allegedly put the theory to him in front of others, saying something to the effect of: “Like you, James. You’re not sharing your theories with anyone.”
This statement reportedly caught Blunt off guard for a very specific reason. Because he had just shared his private thoughts and suspicions with her earlier, he felt her assertion was entirely untrue.
When Blunt was later lobbying the group for Hesmondhalgh’s banishment during the tense roundtable discussions, he pointed to this alleged contradiction as concrete evidence that the actor was actively lying in the competition. Acaster stated that this dynamic is “why Julie got voted off” and remains a pivotal piece of the puzzle that “isn’t in the edit.”
Reflecting on how the situation was ultimately portrayed to the viewing public, Acaster added, “If I was him, I’d be pretty gutted.”
The Independent has contacted the BBC for comment regarding the editorial decisions surrounding the episode.

While Acaster has been busy analyzing the strategic blunders of his fellow contestants, the comedian has navigated a uniquely reluctant journey of his own within the castle walls. Acaster was selected to become a Traitor early in the run, having been secretly recruited by Maya Jama and Richard E Grant—the latter of whom has since been banished—during the very first week of the competition.
Despite wearing the mantle of a Traitor, Acaster has arguably proven to be one of the most vocally unenthusiastic villains in the history of the franchise. He has repeatedly been very open about his true preference for playing the game as a Faithful, desiring a role that allowed him to investigate rather than deceive.
Addressing the twist that forced him to switch allegiance so abruptly at the start of the series, Acaster admitted to mixed feelings about his assignment, though he managed to find humor in the situation.
“I was looking forward to being a little detective, solving puzzles and looking for clues,” Acaster said. However, he acknowledged that he found it “absolutely hilarious” that he was inducted into the ranks of the Traitors after just one day of filming. “I was in that coffin smirking to myself.”
Celebrity Traitors continues tonight at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
