Dame Judi Dench has recalled an amusing and nostalgic reunion with Pierce Brosnan years after the actors shared the screen together across a celebrated run of James Bond films. The British acting veteran, who famously played the formidable MI6 boss "M" during Brosnan’s tenure as the iconic secret agent, shared the anecdote while making a media appearance to promote her new memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?
Appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Dench reflected on the enduring legacy of the 007 franchise and a surprise encounter with her former co-star when Brosnan visited her home. During the visit, the actor was visibly stunned to discover a clever piece of franchise memorabilia hidden in plain sight right on her doorstep.
Dench played M throughout Brosnan’s era in the cinematic franchise, starting with his explosive debut in 1995’s GoldenEye, followed by Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and concluding with Die Another Day. Following Brosnan’s departure from the role, Dench transitioned seamlessly into the Daniel Craig era, guiding the new 007 through the beginning of his tenure until her character’s dramatic and emotional exit in the 2012 blockbuster Skyfall.
Recalling the visit from her former colleague years after they last worked together, Dench explained that Brosnan had been caught completely off guard by a novelty item she had kept outside her front door for a very long period.
"He looked down, and I completely forgotten that I have a doormat there saying, ‘I’ve been expecting you, Mr Bond’," Dench told the BBC Radio 4 programme, noting that she was delighted by the discovery and believed Brosnan was equally amused by the nod to their shared cinematic history.
Beyond sharing lighthearted memories from her time in the spy franchise, the conversation also touched upon the realities of Dench’s current life and her recent health challenges. In recent years, the legendary actress has been dealing with significant eyesight difficulties that have fundamentally altered her professional life and daily routine. Dench has been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration, commonly known as AMD, a condition that progressively blurs an individual’s central vision while typically leaving peripheral vision intact, though it does not cause total blindness.

Opening up about the impact of the condition on her legendary career, Dench delivered a sobering update to listeners, explaining the profound limitations placed upon her craft. "I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play anymore. I can’t do a film anymore. I can’t read anymore," she told the programme. Despite these professional setbacks, Dench continues to engage with audiences through written memoirs, public appearances, and her enduring cultural footprint.
While Brosnan and Dench’s collective spell shaping the world of international espionage now exists firmly in the history books, the broader James Bond franchise continues to generate immense public curiosity, media attention, and fervent speculation. The search for the next actor to step into the immortal tuxedo has remained a major topic of discussion within the entertainment industry following Daniel Craig’s emotional departure after the release of his final 007 film, No Time to Die, in 2021.
Recent industry reports have indicated that the rigorous casting process has narrowed significantly, with rumours suggesting that the search for the next cinematic spy is now down to a final group of contenders. Among the actors heavily linked to the coveted role are Slow Horses star Jack Lowden—widely regarded by many industry observers as an early frontrunner—alongside One Night Only actor Callum Turner and Challengers breakout star Josh O’Connor.
Although Eon Productions and Amazon have yet to announce an official release date, shooting schedule, or confirmed casting decision for the forthcoming franchise reboot, key creative details have begun to fall into place. It has already been confirmed that acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, renowned for his visually stunning work on the Dune series and Blade Runner 2049, is attached to direct the highly anticipated project.
The process of casting the world’s most famous secret agent has always been a subject of intense scrutiny, with casting directors facing the delicate task of balancing star power with the mysterious aura required for the role. Speaking to The Independent earlier this year, retired casting director Debbie McWilliams—who played an instrumental role in identifying and selecting Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig for the franchise across several decades—shared her insights into what makes a successful 007.
McWilliams emphasized that it is absolutely essential for any actor taking on the mantle to retain a total sense of enigma. Expressing caution over the casting of actors who are already household names, she explained that knowing too much about a performer’s personal life can detract from the illusion necessary for a spy thriller.
"I don’t want to see them as Bond because we now know so much about them," McWilliams added during her interview with The Independent. "We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives… He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience."
