‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Returns to YouTube with Spooky New Halloween Short ‘Mama Bear’

Curry Barker, the breakout filmmaker behind the astronomical box office sensation Obsession, has returned to the digital platform that originally launched his career. Just in time for Halloween, Barker has released a brand-new five-minute short horror film on YouTube, once again treating horror enthusiasts to his signature brand of suspense and chilling psychological terror.

Titled Mama Bear, the tense new short centers on a character named Floyd, portrayed by Jon Lee Richardson. The narrative kicks off in a deceptively simple manner, following Floyd as he attempts to catch some much-needed sleep. However, his quiet night is abruptly and repeatedly interrupted by a succession of unnerving phone calls. What initially begins as an irritating late-night disturbance quickly spirals into something far more sinister and terrifying when Floyd uncovers a deeply unsettling possibility: another version of himself may be lurking nearby in the shadows.

To bring this nightmarish doppelgänger concept to life, Joshua Snyder has been cast to play the double, while Katie Sarife and Ericka Kreuz round out the supporting cast as Lacey and Ms Wilson, respectively. Barker dropped the atmospheric short on the "That’s A Bad Idea" YouTube channel, which he shares with his frequent collaborator and creative partner, Cooper Tomlinson.

Barker’s triumphant return to the world of internet horror shorts comes on the heels of the extraordinary, historic success of Obsession. His feature film directorial debut became an unexpected cultural phenomenon, pulling in a staggering $520 million globally against an ultra-lean production budget of just $750,000. Despite achieving massive mainstream success and joining the ranks of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors, Barker has clearly not forgotten his independent roots on YouTube, where he spent years honing his craft.

For Mama Bear, Barker notably brought back several key members of the creative team that helped make Obsession such a visually striking project. Vivian Gray stepped back into her role as production designer, while Blair James oversaw the costume design and styling.

Offering insight into the frantic, high-pressure world of independent short-form filmmaking, James recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the entire project was conceptualized and shot just three and a half weeks prior to its release, resulting in a remarkably quick turnaround for the creative team.

Discussing her ongoing professional relationship with the director, James expressed deep admiration for his collaborative approach. She noted that she always loves getting the opportunity to work with Curry, describing it as a genuine gift to serve as a stylist and costume designer on his sets. She further emphasized that Barker places a great deal of trust in her creative instincts, an aspect of their partnership that consistently makes the filmmaking experience uniquely special for her.

Before catapulting to international fame with feature-length films and massive box office returns, Barker built a dedicated and loyal following online through a series of carefully crafted, tension-filled YouTube horror shorts. His impressive digital portfolio includes previously released chilling titles such as Heavy Eyes, Enigma, Warnings, The Chair, Milk, and Serial, all of which helped establish his reputation as a master of short-form suspense before he transitioned to the big screen.

With his profile at an all-time high, Barker’s schedule is packed with major upcoming projects. He is next slated to return to feature filmmaking with Anything But Ghosts, which is currently scheduled for release in May 2027. For this highly anticipated project, Barker will step in front of the camera to star alongside his friend and frequent collaborator Cooper Tomlinson, with the creative duo also co-writing the screenplay together.

Tomlinson has promised that audiences will see a completely different side of Barker in the upcoming movie. Speaking on the Raiders of the Lost Podcast, Tomlinson discussed the creative direction of the feature, explaining that they wanted to keep the project grounded while allowing Barker to stretch his creative muscles. Tomlinson noted that what is particularly great about the upcoming movie is that Barker tackles some different material and genuinely shows a different side of himself as a filmmaker and performer.

Anything But Ghosts, which officially wrapped production shortly before Obsession took the global box office by storm, follows a pair of con artists who make a living by pretending to be professional ghost hunters. However, the narrative takes a terrifying and authentic haunting twist when the fraudulent duo finds themselves genuinely facing a powerful, actual dark entity. Alongside Barker and Tomlinson, the star-studded cast for Anything But Ghosts includes prominent names such as Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw.

In addition to his upcoming feature work and his newly released YouTube short, Barker’s red-hot career shows no signs of slowing down. He is also officially attached to write and direct a heavily anticipated reimagined take on the legendary Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, cementing his status as one of the definitive modern voices in contemporary horror.
