Honoring Yuri Kochiyama: New Children’s Literature Spotlights the Legacy of a Trailblazing Human Rights Activist

When author Mia Wenjen began working on her manuscript about the legendary political activist Yuri Kochiyama nearly seven years ago, she noticed a glaring absence on bookshelves. At the time, there were virtually no published books dedicated to Kochiyama’s extraordinary life. For Wenjen, bringing Kochiyama’s story to light was both a professional endeavor and a deeply personal calling. Growing up in Seal Beach, California, not far from where Kochiyama spent her early years, Wenjen felt an immediate affinity. Furthermore, Kochiyama was close in age to Wenjen’s mother—both were Japanese American women whose lives were upended and forced to leave their homes during World War II. Reflecting on this historical oversight, Wenjen realized that Kochiyama simply deserved a dedicated book.

Kochiyama possessed what Wenjen describes as a "genius-level" capacity for social-emotional intelligence. She forged profound, lasting friendships that effortlessly cut across perceived racial, cultural, and societal boundaries. Her ability to connect with people from all walks of life became a hallmark of her activism. Blessed with an epic memory and a meticulous catalog system, she effortlessly kept track of friends, comrades, and acquaintances from her sprawling network. Although Kochiyama aspired to be a journalist, systemic racism barred her from pursuing that career path professionally. Undeterred, she redirected her exceptional writing skills toward letter-writing, using correspondence as a primary tool to build movements, maintain community, and mark the major milestones of her life.

In the book, Williams traces Kochiyama’s evolution from a young girl growing into adolescence in a predominantly white town to a fierce, dedicated grassroots activist anchored in New York City’s Harlem. What stands out most vividly in Kochiyama’s biographical narrative is the sheer consistency of her labor. Her activism was not defined by occasional grand gestures, but by persistent, day-after-day, year-after-year commitment. This dedication manifested in the smallest of details: remembering names, checking in on people during personal crises, and opening her home to host community members.

Kochiyama herself often summarized her life’s mission with a powerful guiding principle: "The legacy I would like to leave is that people try to build bridges and not walls." Malcolm X invited Kochiyama to join the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) Liberation School, a turning point that deeply expanded her political consciousness. Reflecting on his teachings, Kochiyama later noted, "One of the greatest lessons Malcolm taught people was to learn their own history. Know your history. Know the world. Be proud of who you are… But don’t stop there. Learn about the histories of other people. And learn about the social movements because this is how you learn to create social change."

Through her relationship with Malcolm X, Kochiyama gained a clearer understanding of how deeply embedded systemic racism was within American society. She observed that Malcolm X viewed racism and imperialism as the root causes of societal struggles, arguing that the solutions required an international perspective. Though their friendship lasted a mere sixteen months before Malcolm X’s tragic assassination, it fundamentally altered the trajectory of Kochiyama’s life.
