For crafters, gift-givers, and animal lovers searching for a unique, calming present, a newly popularized DIY project offers a simple way to elevate a traditional glass fishbowl. By combining classic glassware with whimsical, sea-themed illustrations, creators can transform a standard fish container into a vibrant underwater world without the need to purchase or maintain complicated tank accessories.

The concept merges minimalist pet care with personalized art, making it an engaging activity for both children and adults. Watching a small fish paddle around its newly decorated enclosure provides a therapeutic and calming way to spend free time, while the addition of hand-drawn or traced marine illustrations turns an ordinary glass container into a thoughtful, customized gift.
To help crafters overcome any hesitation regarding their drawing abilities, the project incorporates specially commissioned artwork. Illustrator Stephanie Frey partnered on the initiative to design a series of three distinct underwater scenes that can be easily printed and traced onto any standard glass fishbowl. The available design options allow creators to tailor the aesthetic of the bowl to their personal preferences or the recipient’s tastes. Participants can choose between a playful school of fish, a detailed ocean floor featuring a pirate ship and hidden treasure, or a lush arrangement of seaweed and coral. For those wanting a more immersive environment, all three designs can even be combined on a single bowl.

The process relies on a minimal list of readily accessible supplies, keeping the project both budget-friendly and straightforward. Required materials include a standard glass fishbowl, a selection of permanent markers, the downloadable underwater scene templates, and household tape to secure the patterns during the tracing process.
When it comes to selecting the appropriate writing utensil for the glass surface, creators have several options depending on their desired level of permanence and flexibility. Standard permanent markers work well for basic applications, though they typically cannot withstand rigorous scrubbing. However, this temporary nature can be advantageous for individuals who prefer to change the scenery of the bowl frequently. Alternatively, oil-based permanent markers provide superior color opacity, adhere strongly to the glass, and can still be conveniently removed using rubbing alcohol or acetone if a mistake occurs during the tracing process. A third alternative involves dedicated porcelain or glass markers, which are manufactured specifically for decorating glass surfaces and are typically made permanent by curing them in a household oven according to the manufacturer’s specific instructions.

Executing the design requires only a few basic actions. Crafters simply tape their chosen printable template to the inside or outside of the glass, depending on visibility and working angles, and trace the lines using the marker of their choice on the exterior surface of the bowl. Depending on the size of the glassware being used, creators may need to adjust the print scale. Most standard bowls require the printouts to be reduced to approximately seventy to eighty percent of their original size, while larger elements like the ocean floor template may need to be enlarged to around one hundred and twenty-five percent. The templates can also be freely rearranged and mixed to fit the unique dimensions of any chosen bowl.
Once the exterior doodles are complete and positioned to the creator’s satisfaction, the habitat is ready to be filled with water and a fish, keeping proper aquatic care guidelines in mind. Experts emphasize the importance of carefully following standard instructions for introducing a live animal to a new aquatic environment. Additionally, animal care discussions surrounding the project have highlighted that certain fish species, such as betta fish, are well-suited to thrive in smaller bowl environments, whereas other species, like goldfish, require significantly larger filtration and tank systems.

The finished creation can be further personalized with a simple decorative ribbon tied around the rim, making the customized aquatic habitat immediately ready for gifting. The project was originally developed in collaboration with Amy Christie for Design Mom, offering a fresh perspective on how everyday household items can be personalized through accessible art and thoughtful design.
